Cable Railing Wood Types will vary by location and availability to the consumer. Typically wood members can be easily purchased at local lumberyards and home improvement stores, but what type of wood should be used for your cable railings?? What type of wooden top railings are best when combined with stainless steel railing posts?? A general rule of thumb is that any hard and dense wood species will perform best when used in combination with stainless steel cables. Wood types that are utilized outdoors should have natural resistance to rot and insects, and it is commonly recommended to treat exterior timbers with oils and preservatives. Wooden cable railings and wood framed cable fences can be an attractive and cost effective way to construct a modern railing or fence. Wood timbers will typically be more forgiving to work with; especially for DIY installers. Additionally, wooden railing frames will be more easy to modify in the field than steel railing frames. Interior wood types will many times vary from those used outside the home. Many customers desire to mimic existing finishes, trim work, or flooring. Interior railings require more finish work and many times custom milling in order to provide a different scale than what is used outside.
