Cable Railing Code Compliance-

Cable railings are also sometimes referred to as wire railings. The horizontal cables are typically threaded through a variety of different deck railing posts, and the cables are then tensioned to provide rigidity and ensure safety. Cable railing installations have raised some questions throughout the years about code compliance. The horizontal nature and deflection associated with cable railings differs from the standard solid vertical balusters we’ve grown accustomed to for so many years.

Stainless steel cable railings have become very popular due to the clean lines, and unobstructed views through the cables. In addition T316 marine grade stainless steel is ultra corrosion resistant. But are cable railings safe? Do they satisfy building code? Although codes and municipalities vary and you should always check your local codes; the answer is YES!

Our cable railing kits have been utilized across the country and passed inspections in high traffic areas such as amusement parks, shopping malls, pedestrian bridges, military installations, and raised single and multi family units such as the photo illustrates. Cable railing code compliance requires considerations like proper post spacing, cable tension, and cable spacing.

The featured image illustrates a multi unit condominium complex in Southern California. The railing package furnished by San Diego Cable Railings features stainless steel posts, 1/8” stainless steel cable, and 2×4” Ipe hardwood top railings. The project was inspected by a city building inspector for lateral load and spacing requirements; and satisfied code.

Stainless steel lag bolts were used to attach the railing posts to the structure. The 3” cable spacing will not allow a 4” sphere to pass through the cables. The deck attachment and top railings satisfy the lateral load requirement. The inspection was passed with flying colors and the fortunate residents of this beautiful coastal complex enjoy their views and get ready for another day at the beach.
