Curved Precision for Radius Handrails Curved railings (Radius Rail) create an aesthetic wow factor and provide challenges for even the most seasoned fabricators.  One of the first most important considerations when addressing a curved railing section is material selection. Most deck and stairway railings are constructed from 3 different material families: Wood– For curved railings wood timbers can require steaming or lamination to accurately preserve a radius. Metal/Steel– Tube steel and or stainless steel/ aluminum can be bent using specialized tools. Railing sections will sometimes need to be fabricated off site and installed as one piece sections. Composites– PVC and composite products like Trex can be heat formed for smooth curves.  DURABILITY AND WEATHER RESISTANCE Durability and weather resistance should be considered during material selection for radius handrail construction. Suitable materials for preserving natural curves should also be suitable for the enviornment in which they are utilized.  Code Compliant Curved Railings Curved railings can be very sturdy due to engineering factors related to curved structural members. Height and diameter requirements are the same for radius railings as standard railing sections: Height: Typically 36-42 inches above the walking surface. Diameter/Width: Usually 1.25-2 inches for graspability and 3.5-6″ for drink rail or barrier sections. Clearance: At least 1.5 inches between the handrail and wall or other surfaces. Continuity: Handrails must be continuous along the curve without interruptions. Handrails must be able to withstand a minimum force of 200 pounds applied in any direction at any point along the top rail.  Installers and DIYer’s alike should keep this in mind when calculating post and top rail spans, vertical picket spacing and horizontal cable tensioning. Sturdy rails = easy inspections and code compliance.   FABRICATION TECHNIQUES: Pre-formed Sections: Order or create pre-bent pieces for precise curves. On-site Bending: Use heat (for PVC/metal) or steam (for wood) to shape the material during installation. Segmented Construction: For sharp curves, join smaller straight sections at angles, then smooth the transitions.   Aesthetic Considerations Aesthetically, curves should flow naturally with existing staircases, walls, decks, or whichever architectural design elements involved in the build. Joints and seams should be smoothed and polished prior to completion. Finishes like paint and powder coating should be performed after all fabrication processes to conceal any imperfections. Compound radius applications and tight curves may require alternative means. Curved cable railings may require tighter post spacing to preserve radius aesthetics.  Curved Glass-curved glass panels can be fabricated although the process is challenging.
